The 2019 Lok Sabha elections in India marked a significant and highly anticipated event in the country’s political landscape. Held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, 2019, the elections were conducted to elect members of the lower house of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha. With over 900 million eligible voters, it was the largest democratic exercise in the world.
The elections were primarily contested between the two major national parties: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian National Congress (INC) led by Rahul Gandhi. Throughout the campaign, various regional parties also played a crucial role in forming alliances and presenting themselves as alternatives to the national parties. The alliances led by BJP, such as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and the alliances led by INC, such as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), garnered significant attention in key states.
The elections witnessed intense public engagement and debates across the country. The election commission ensured smooth conduct and security during the voting process. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used, along with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) to maintain transparency and credibility.
As the results were declared on May 23, 2019, it became clear that the BJP-led NDA secured a resounding victory, winning 353 out of 545 seats in the Lok Sabha. The BJP alone won a clear majority with 303 seats, empowering Narendra Modi to continue as Prime Minister for a second term. The INC and its allies faced a major setback, winning only 52 seats.
